The Sea Captain’s Nutcracker
Presented By Turning Pointe Dance Studio
November 29, 2008
Tilden Arts Center
2:00pm and 6:30pm
Originally conceived and choreographed by world class dancers Catherine Batcheller and Joseph Cipolla of Configuration dance and directed by Laura Faria of Turning Pointe Dance Studio, with set and costume designs by London stage designer Jean Marc Puissant, this production is an innovative version of the classic holiday favorite. Set in a Chatham Sea Captain’s home in the mid 1800’s, the script, written by local author Anne LeClaire, will take us on an enchanting journey through local history and folklore invoking elements of the natural environs of Cape Cod. The heroic battle scene takes place shipboard as the ship is attacked by mooncussers off the coast of Eastham and a swift and violent storm off Monomoy Point threatens the voyage. The salty old Sea Captain replaces the traditional Drosselmeyer character. Having sailed the high seas, he returns home to Chatham bearing exotic gifts for Clara. Audiences will be charmed by the Waltz of The Sea Grass and will thrill to the Dance of the Icy Winds.
This magical production will take place Thanksgiving weekend with two performances at the Tilden Arts Center in Barnstable. The cast of over 60 dancers will include professional and principal dancers from major U.S. ballet companies as well as prominent local citizens and students from Cape Cod.
